Back when we were residents of Makati in the late 80s, Ayala Museum and its adjacent aviary were our haven and sanctuary.

Meandering through the cool airconditioned hall of the museum, immersing ourselves in their permanent collections or passing exhibits was a regular treat.

In Microcosm at the Ayala Museum

The dioramas, library and archives took us back in time and into the future — worlds of wonder to inspire and delight us.

Stepping out of the museum and walking through the aviary kept us suspended in that magical world. Buying us some time between tropical rain forest illusion and urban jungle reality.

Intertwined Exhibit at Ayala Museum

Returning to the newly renovated venue brought back all these sweet memories. Even if the aviary is long gone and its replacement a glaring monument to cement and commercialism — we still got to enjoy their Lenten exhibit which ends on April 2.

Aptly titled “Intertwined: Transpacific, Transcultural Philippines” it captures years of the local and foreign weaving of the Filipino web of life.

As Filipinos now based abroad in the US and UK we appreciate this contrary collaboration and conflicted contrast even more.

A blessed Semana Santa to all!
