Mandalas are a beloved symbol originating long before any recorded history. The most admired and discussed symbol of divinity and art is the mandala. Like guru and yoga, it is now part of the English language and our daily life.
At wonder | wander | world the mandala captured our imagination in our formative years — circles and cycles, center and core, community and collaboration. It has permeated our being and pervaded our lives in countless ways. We have used it as a guiding force and vital compass in decision making, planning, and application.
Our latest project is a mandala coloring book for kids at heart of any age. An exploration of the joys and delights we all hold within us. These mesmerizing freely hand drawn patterns were designed to provide a serene sanctuary in which to pursue pathways into our innermost being.
The creation and presence of mandalas are seen as sacred places — a reminder of the innate sanctity within the universe and our inner inherent potential. The mandala concept is significant as a visual and creative contribution to devotion and psychology.
In the context of the spiritual path the purpose of a mandala is to put an end to human suffering, to attain enlightenment, and to achieve a clearer grasp of reality. It is a means to explore divinity with the realization that it resides within each of us.
Through exploring a variety of artistic formats and processes the mandala can be used to find or restore a healthy mental balance or to treat those who suffer from depression and anxiety.
Carl Jung — credited for having introduced the mandala concept to the west — often created mandalas to depict structures of self expression and exploring his interior world.
The Mandala Project explains, the word “mandala” comes from the Sanskrit word for “circle.” Mandalas are revered symbols present in many cultural traditions and spiritual practices. A mandala is far more than a simple shape — representing wholeness and unity.
It can be seen as a model for the organizational structure of life itself — a cosmic diagram that reminds us of our relation to the infinite, the world that extends both beyond and within our bodies and minds.
Recognizing what we share in common as we respect our differences increases our capacity for holding peace. Truth, beauty, and goodness are values honored in all cultures.
Through the pursuit of knowledge we arrive at truth. In nature we experience beauty. From acts of kindness we can observe and develop goodness.
Combined with art these mindset is the foundation on which we build connections that are able to nourish and spread peace.
