Humanity has painted itself into a corner in its pursuit to control and harness our natural environment. As a result we seldom find absolutely natural environments on Earth — where naturalness varies from 100% natural in one extreme to 0% natural in the other. Prioritizing human comfort and convenience over all else has turned much of our natural world into an artificial habitat.

At what price and cost to the ecosystem and biodiversity of our planet? The trouble may have started in how we categorize elements — as biotic, or living organisms and abiotic, what are considered non-living things.

Living organisms started out in just two categories — animals and plants. Later with evolved research and study, additional differentiation was added — bacteria, fungi, and protists [protozoans, eukaryotic algae, slime molds, etc.].

The series is now streaming on Netflix

Non-living elements listed are minerals, soil, air, light, and water. No wonder these naturally occurring elements of nature have been so overused, misused and abused in the human world. We do not believe them to be alive even if we cannot live without them. Incredible.

With the advent of our current climate crisis several stunning documentaries now trace and track the human impact on our natural environment. Nothing like hindsight to give us the 20/20 vision and awakened wisdom that would have served us better prior to the destruction of so much in wanton greed.

Truth to Power

There are more environmental films covering a range in topics with various opportunities to learn about the planet and how to protect it. It is not easy nor endless though quite essential — as world leaders waver on their commitments to fighting climate change.
