Creating creative space is a delicate balance between inspiration, absorption, immersion, gestation, process, and production. At wonder | wander | world we remove and step away for freshness and space to come in. Often when it looks like nothing is going on, we are soaking in our creative soup.

When we don’t take the time out to prepare the ground before planting our seeds, chances are we miss out on watching our garden grow.

Inspiration. Our dreams can dredge up mud and gems of our making. We can easily feel stuck in the muck and the mire of our past, our relationships, our low moments. Stay awake and alert, focused on what we treasure most — all the best that life has to offer us.

Engage all basic Mercury retrograde and Venus retrograde survival skills. Retrogrades cause us to look backwards and feel like we’ll never get out of the 2020–2021 covid vortex. We can progress by staying calm, doing what we can do, and taking one step at a time. No plans, no pressure — release, relax, roll on.

Absorption. We may not always be in ideal circumstances, yet we can definitely learn from even the worst of it. Facebook tosses odd memories into our virtual lap, with images and stories that can twist us every which way.

Prioritize safety and watch out for fluky accidents. If things get strange or delays change the schedule, consciously review any good memories and focus on the healthy progress we achieved so far. Look for the opportunity hidden within the unplanned experience and make the best of it. Use this time to clean up the past, reconnect with old contacts and familiar beloveds, and revive old creative projects.

Immersion. Look at what’s here, closely and with care. Feel those emotions, with clarity and compassion. It is what it is, drop the resistance and let go of the struggle. Sink into it, carefully and neutrally. Approach it from within, as fully owed by and utterly you.

Let all feelings be transient, do not read the story of the future in this moment. If our minds spend time with those we miss or notice a story that brushes closer to mortality, be reminded to take care of one another, get right with each other, and be fully alive now.

Gestation. Conceiving and developing ideas, pregnant with possibility. Travel the many points and trajectories that present themselves. Explore and enjoy as many “what ifs” as possible.

Let the world’s difficulties inspire more authenticity, not less. Take care of the home, family, and chosen family — increase coziness. Relax those defenses — worry less about staying safe and more about honestly sharing — open heartedly, through considerate actions.

new year’s eve

Process. Mystical? Magic? This often-incomprehensible mystery can be confusing. A journey from preparation through illumination, implementation, and evaluation is hardly straightforward. What results in a hit? or a miss?

Moods change quickly, emotional storms can cloud over bright skies — as we feel fully and deeply. Sidestep power struggles. Dwell neither in the past nor the future; stay here and now. We can tap into something larger than ourselves for stability. Connect with the earth beneath, the sky above, and the spirit within all. After digging inward, bring what’s discovered out, and wave it about.

Production. The cake we baked. Literally and figuratively having our cake and eating it too. What we make is what sustains us. Production refers to the conversion of input, the factors of production, into a desired output.

A project needs attention and care. It eases practical work if we nurture connection first and then attempt to coordinate and collaborate. What is within needs to be nurtured to grow the connection to birth it outward — to bring our creation out in the world and our communities.
