summer reads

Over here in New York City, we have the weird tradition of celebrating Christmas in July.

Maybe it is simply a commercial bid to drum up sales when the city empties out. As folks leave for vacations or are driven indoors by the overbearing heat.

Most stores start purchasing their inventory for the coming Christmas season in July. To make room for new stocks they usually put last year’s unsold Christmas items on sale.

If you know what you are looking for and where to go, there are some fine deals at marked down sale prices to bring on the holidays months in advance.

Today we came across a friend’s post on Facebook about the Icelandic tradition of Jólabókaflóðið or yule book flood.

Iceland is one of the most literarily engaged countries — in fact one in ten Icelanders will publish a book in their lifetime.

With a culture that’s so deeply rooted in the love for literature, Iceland has dedicated this yearly holiday tradition to a countrywide gifting and appreciation of books.

Being bookworms ourselves, wonder | wander | women are in full support of more reading for all.

Better yet, don’t bother to wait for Christmas, start stockpiling those books now. What better way to while away the dog days of summer. Be a beach bum and catch up on all that reading now.

Here is a list of what Mahala and Issa are reading.

What’s on your current reading list? It’s never too soon to get started on your yuletide wish list either!
